What is UV Index? A 0-11+ scale measuring the strength of ultraviolet radiation from the sun at a given location and time.
UV Index runs from 0 (no UV) to 11+ (extreme UV). At UV 6, unprotected skin can show damage after 30 minutes; at UV 9+, after 15 minutes. Tropical summer noon often reaches UV 11+. Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, UPF clothing) is recommended at UV 3+ for sustained outdoor exposure; mandatory at UV 8+; activity limits make sense at UV 11+.
