Editorial Standards
WhetherWear is written and maintained by an editorial team with backgrounds in outdoor apparel, technical layering, weather science, and travel. Recommendations are researched against primary sources (NOAA, OSHA, AAP, manufacturer specs, peer-reviewed research) and tested against real conditions before publication.
Editorial principles
Every WhetherWear recommendation has to clear three bars before it ships: it has to be sourceable to an authoritative primary reference, it has to be testable against the conditions it claims to address, and it has to reflect what the editorial team would actually wear. We do not publish brand-prompted content, we do not accept sponsored recommendations in the outfit engine, and we do not invent figures we cannot cite.
Primary sources we work from
- NOAA — Wind chill calculator and frostbite-time chart
- CDC NIOSH — Cold stress guidance
- CDC NIOSH — Heat stress guidance
- EPA — UV Index scale
- OSHA — Cold-weather worker safety
- American Academy of Pediatrics — Child cold-weather guidance
How we update guides
Every guide carries a datePublished (original) and dateModified (most recent edit). The full build pipeline regenerates structured data, internal-link graph, and sitemap on every release, so a content correction in any guide cascades into every related page within a single build. Editorial corrections trigger a republish; the canonical URL never changes.
YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics
Three glossary entries — frostbite, hypothermia, and heat stroke — carry full MedicalCondition structured data with ICD-10 codes, signs and symptoms, risk factors, and treatment guidance pulled from CDC and NOAA. These pages carry an explicit disclaimer: they are educational reference, not medical advice. Always call emergency services for any suspected case.
Affiliate disclosure
Some product references on WhetherWear are Amazon Associates affiliate links. WhetherWear earns a commission on qualifying purchases at no additional cost to the buyer. The affiliate program does not influence the editorial recommendation — we link to product categories we would recommend regardless of the affiliate relationship.
