What to Wear in New York City
New York City has four real seasons and the wind tunnel of Manhattan to deal with. Winter lows hit single digits with wind chill; summer highs cross 95°F with brutal humidity. Spring and fall are short and unpredictable. Dressing well in NYC means layering for the subway and the sidewalk, and owning the right outerwear for each season.
Winter in New York City
December through March. Lows from 15°F to 30°F, regular dips into the single digits with wind chill. Wool overcoat or insulated parka, merino base layers, scarf, gloves, beanie, leather boots treated for salt. The wind off the Hudson and East River is the wild card — dress for the wind chill, not the air temperature.
Spring in New York City
April through May. 50-70°F highs with frequent rain. Trench coat or unstructured jacket, packable rain shell, leather Chelsea boots, layered tops. Mornings can still hit 40°F into early May.
Summer in New York City
June through August. 75-95°F with humidity that pushes the heat index past 100°F. Linen everything. Lightweight cotton dress shirts for office workers. AC contrast in subway and offices is real — carry a light layer indoors.
Fall in New York City
September through November. 50-70°F transitioning to 30-50°F. The most comfortable NYC season. Wool sweaters, denim or wool trousers, leather boots, light scarves. October is the city's perfect month.
Local tips
The subway adds a fifth climate. Crowded, hot in summer, sometimes cold in winter. Always carry a layer you can adjust. Walking shoes matter — 15,000+ steps per day is normal.
