What is Shell Layer? The outermost layer in a layering system, designed to block wind and water.
A shell layer is the outermost garment in the three-layer system. Its job is to protect the inner layers from wind, rain, and snow. Hard shells (waterproof and breathable, like Gore-Tex) handle wet conditions. Soft shells (wind-resistant but more breathable) handle dry, breezy conditions. Insulated shells combine the function of a mid-layer and a shell.
