What is Mid Layer? The middle insulating layer in a three-layer system, designed to trap warm air close to the body.
A mid-layer sits between the base layer and the shell. Its job is to trap warm air. Fleece, wool sweaters, down jackets, down vests, and synthetic puffers all serve as mid-layers. Loft matters more than weight — a thin lofty fleece often outperforms a heavy compressed knit. In cold conditions, multiple mid-layers may be used.
