What is Ten Essentials? A standard list of items every hiker should carry on every trip, regardless of length.
The Ten Essentials are: navigation (map and compass), sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, hat), insulation (extra clothes), illumination (headlamp or flashlight), first-aid supplies, fire (matches, lighter), repair tools and knife, nutrition (extra food), hydration (extra water), emergency shelter. Originally codified by Mountaineers in the 1930s. The list has evolved but the principle is unchanged: every hike longer than a casual park stroll should include these.
